30 years of Nicolson Maps
1979 – 2009
Nicolson Maps was in 1979 by Malcolm Nicolson. 30 years on Nicolson Maps remains a family business with a great reputation and proven record of success. Run by Robin Nicolson, we have grown to be the largest independent map company in Scotland having developed an impressive business, built upon our basic philosophy of genuine and efficient customer service.
Malcolm Nicolson (1937 – 2009) began his mapping career as a surveyor in the Ordnance Survey, where he spent many years before establishing his own map business. Malcolm produced his first street guide to sell locally to raise funds for a Largs Scout Group and from there, the need for good quality, local mapping was recognised.
This first map was the forerunner of a wide range of maps now produced in Nicolson Maps’ distinctive style of clear, easy-to-read mapping. The ‘wee blue’ Street Guide range covers most towns and villages in Scotland, and the maps are kept up to date on a regular basis. We are currently developing our Tourist Map Range which now covers many areas of Scotland. We draw and publish our own maps, as well as being wholesalers and retailers for a vast range of other maps.
Nicolson Maps is a licensed partner of the Ordnance Survey and we are an Ordnance Survey Mapping and Data Centre, providing large scale maps for the public from our cartographic workshop in Largs (Scotland). In 2008, Nicolson Maps became a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen.

General Manager & Partner
He doesn’t leave his desk very often but when he does, you might catch a blurry glimpse of Robin hurling past on a forest road navigating a rally car. Either that or on the golf course - David Robertson watch out…(see below) - or else as a leader at the 71st Skelmorlie Cubs.
Sales Manager & Head Rep
Alistair has been here the longest and supported Malcolm right from the start. Alistair is also known as Akela Wyllie of the 71st Ayrshire Skelmorlie Cubs, where he is always busy planning terrific activites, as well as being heavily involved with the commercial side of Greenock Morton. Come on the Ton!
Head Cartographer
Val has been with Nicolson Maps for 10 years and when she’s not drawing maps, you’ll find her being a fitness instructor, running for charity, cooking, starring in the local panto, gardening, renovating her old cottage or out walking her dog in the Aberdeenshire countryside. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life!
Warehouse Manager
Ian has been at Nicolson Maps for some 16 years and before that, worked with Malcolm in the Ordnance Survey. These days, when Ian’s not in the warehouse, he’ll be at Prestwick Cricket Club, working up his golf, playing badminton or in his other guise as DJ in a regular spot in Troon.
Cartographer
When Stewart’s not drawing maps you’ll find him on the golf course, playing football or following his beloved Greenock Morton.
Warehouseman
When Stewart is not at Nicolson Maps you’ll find him BBQ-ing at Prestwick Cricket Club in the summer or out camping and hill-walking with his son and daughter in all weathers.
Sales Rep
When he’s not driving his van the length and breadth of the country, our debonair rep, like Alistair and Robin, leads the 71st Ayrshire Skelmorlie Bay Cubs. Tom also is a Greenock Morton supporter and helps with the commercial side of the club.
Sales Rep
Another golfer – but not just any golfer: this is Nicolson Maps’ No.1. When David is not going round the country with the maps or on the golf course, you’ll find him playing basket ball.
Sales Rep
When Ian’s not out with the maps, he enjoys reading and relaxing. At weekends, he’s the chef at home – lucky MacLeod family!
